The future and transformation of the Smart Grid technologies

Abstract

Nowadays, Utility digitalization and integration of advanced Operation Technologies (OT) and Information Technologies (IT) in Utilities is under way, building Smart Grid Solutions (SGS) to operate the power grid in an intelligent and more efficient way, producing less pollution and ownership and operation less cost.

IT / OT integration is a complex and a long-term process, which will occupy Utilities in the next decade, to really produce efficient grid management in the presence of renewables.

However, complexity of new IT / OT technologies is not sustainable by Utilities itself from technical and commercial side, and they will have to move to “cloud” and Software as a Service (SaaS), and to partner with strong IT vendors capable to provide such service.

Smart Grid intelligence (IT) will move “out of premise” to the “cloud”, whereas critical OT will remain embedded into the grid facilities.

Only several strong vendors, capable of providing Smart Grid SaaS technology with full IT cyber security, will stay on the market, they will create regional data and solution centers to support new technology and provide SaaS to many Utilities of all size.

This Utility transformation will take next 10 to 20 years, ending with SGS fully deployed in cloud and served as a service with strong cybersecurity support, providing full efficiency of grid management in the presence of renewables.
